In July 2018 I went to help as a volunteer in Tramonti. The original idea that arose is to connect all the houses in this village by a ‘line’. This idea comes from a legend associated with the village. The story is that one evening an old woman knocked on a resident’s door and asked for food, although the resident of the house was not wealthy, she shared with the woman what little food she had. As a thank you, the old woman gave her a ball of wool. The woman went to work with the wool and knitted a sweater for her children, but the wool never ran out and the whole village can therefore dress warmly because of that one good deed of this woman. The thread that runs through the village, and the large ball of wool in mosaic, refer to this story. Every year a number of permanent maestra meet in the village to add new designs and mosaics. Last year we were with a group of 5 to lend a hand. To keep costs down, the villagers are asked to keep broken plates, etc., that break during the year, then their artifacts resurface later in the mosaics. If you ever come near you should definitely check it out, the village is only 2 streets big and tiny, but they do have a fantastic restaurant.
