There will be no new photos of new work for a while because I want to save them for my first solo mosaic exhibition in April 2026. From April 11 to 19, 2026, Chaussée de Bruxelles in Waterloo.

Title – ‘Highland cow’

I made this cow in preparation for a few workshops I’m giving in Scotland in 2025. I’d never made an animal with long hair before and wanted to figure out for myself what to look for. Also the fact that the cow is lying down in the grass in a hilly landscape, there are a few solutions for that I know now, so I hope we’ll see some differences with the students. The other students are making a robin or a puffin. So undoubtedly to be continued.

This is the second mosaic based on my own photos. I have noticed that this is my first work where opinions are quite divided, depending on the perspective from which one looks at it. Some only see a woman with a bit of excess weight, the coca-cola and the chips, others see a woman who has taken care of her family all day and falls asleep exhausted in front of the TV in the evening. The latter was more the idea I had when I made this. The ordinary, hard-working housewife who is overlooked…

This is the first mosaic in the series that started from a self-made photo. The idea was to show Snow White as an older person. 6 of the 7 dwarves have died and instead of being surrounded by all sorts of cute animals, there is only this annoying fly. For me it is about growing older, the decline that we all experience as we get older, something that I never really thought about as a child, the fact that older people have more difficulty moving because they are in pain. Going gray and wrinkles are not so bad, but the physical discomforts are. It is also about saying goodbye and those who are left behind. It is a bit humorous but also feels as if I sympathize with these characters. The gnawed apple around her neck refers to the fairy tale but also to a part of life that has already passed.

When I organized my first workshop ‘Roman with a twist’, I wanted to make a red robin myself, I have always loved that bird. Once, at the beginning of my mosaic training, I visited the basilica in Aquileia (Italy) and fell in love with the many birds in mosaic. I found it fascinating how the Romans managed to depict birds in a recognizable way, despite extreme simplification. And now I’m making my own series ‘Roman with a twist’. And now a series of birds, of course always with a TWIST.

This is the first mosaic in the series that is not based on a photo found on the internet. From now on I work with my own photos or, like this one, a photo of a friend’s mother, who knows what kind of photos I am looking for. This photo was taken in a swimming pool, but in the design the figure has been moved to the ocean. The total relaxation that the woman radiates was therefore the inspiration for someone who without realizing it drifts away from her island. There are several layers in terms of meaning, but I like to leave that to the viewer’s imagination. The title has therefore become ‘Mom’s day off’.

From October 14, 2023 to January 14, 2024, on view at the 8th Ravenna Biennale. This work was inspired by the art of Alberto Burri, an Italian artist. I sent this text to the jury: When I started studying Burri’s work, the curator told me about the fact that he was actually a surgeon by training and that the stitches in his work refer to the stitching of wounds. I immediately thought of inner wounds, which I think we all carry within us. My works often refer to Roman mosaics, and masks also belong there. But my mask has different layers, because don’t we all wear a bit of a mask, do we really know who we are? Or is our own face also a kind of mask? To me, the hessian of the mask also refers to masks for burn victims, which in turn refers to Burri’s work treating the surfaces with fire.

This Cuban woman is very well known, I think there are a lot of photos of her all over the world. Her name is Graciela Gonzales also known as Granny Puretta. I think she sits (or sat) in that place every day to smoke her cigar. In the photo she is already over 80, in other photos you can also see that she only has a few of her teeth left. But she does her make up every day, flowers in her hair, necklaces, bracelets, rings,… What a beautiful woman, whose being tells the story of a whole life. For me she also radiates enormous tranquility, taking the time to sit there and smoke and taking all the time to do so, in this hectic life I think we can still learn something from her.

When the mosaic was just finished and I put it on Facebook, it was sold 3 hours later. A new

record ;-).

This woman stands tall and is not afraid of anything or anyone. I don’t think you could hardly adopt a more proud attitude. What a challenge it was to make the black and white stripes here. And how different a face becomes when you turn your face up.

The beauty of an everyday moment, cooling off on a hot day, even if you have to bring your walking stick. A chat with an old friend, banal, endearing and therefore also beautiful. Going out in a bathing suit or bikini despite the signs of the years is how it should always be, right?… the shark fin is a joke I added ;-).

I am more and more interested in making curvy ladies, or ladies who feel great just the way they are, it gives me great pleasure to make them, to immortalize them in stone and show the beauty of them… I often get nice reactions from plus size ladies, who feel great being the subject of an art piece. So there will definitely be a few more ;-).

A completely different work perhaps from the previous ones? But did you know that this gesture, which we all know, dates back to the Greeks and was later adopted by the Romans? At that time, however, the gesture did not have a negative connotation as it does with us today. So it definitely belongs in my series ‘ Roman with a twist ‘ because I can imagine that the Romans would also depict this … they liked a bit of humor and a bit of provocation from time to time, right?

Louis Armstrong seen from a bird’s eye view. What a great man he was, wasn’t he? Of course it fits well into my Roman series as theater and musicians were often depicted as well. It reminds me a bit of genie coming out of a bottle, I’m even toying with the idea of hanging such an old cauldron under it… But for now it’s good too 😉

This is the fourth mosaic in the ‘Roman with a twist’ series. We often see sports depicted in ancient Roman mosaics, men in long clothes (or a skirt) can also be spotted, but I’ve never seen fluorescent sports shoes ;-). Each mosaic comes with its own challenges, with this one, simplifying the skirt and not getting lost in the lines that should or should not go through, was quite a challenge! But that’s ok, that’s how it stays fun, exciting and fascinating. I already have an idea for the next one…

I thought that was more masculine, tougher…

Aurora Mosaics said about this mosaic: Since it is a contemporary theme/image made in Roman style, I have to look twice to see if the Romans could have made this and then I see it isn’t (because of the theme, Sumo Wrestlers didn’t excist yet), but the mastery is there. So it’s a bit of a brain twister and that’s why I like the job so much.
