VIII Biennale Ravenna 2023
From October 14, 2023 to On January 14, 2024, my work ‘The Theater of Life’, inspired by the work of the Italian artist Alberto Burri, will participate in the Biennale in Ravenna. The work was selected by a jury together with 30 other works from 57 entries to participate in this exhibition.
This is my second participation in the Biennale in Ravenna.
In the meantime I was in beautiful Ravenna and the weather was beautiful there, unlike Belgium. We missed the official opening because it was in the afternoon and not in the evening as I expected. But the AIMC members dinner on Sunday evening made up for all that. And we saw so many beautiful things, but above all we met many fascinating people and had fantastic conversations about mosaics.
At the last minute we were also able to visit the top mosaic artist Marco De Luca because he is closing his doors to the public. Of course he will continue to mosaic, but unfortunately visiting, talking to him and visiting his beautiful studio is over.
You can still visit yourself until January 14, 2024!
The title of my work is ‘The theater of life’ and I also provided this text to the jury.
When I started to study Burri’s work the curator talked about the fact that he was actually a surgeon by training and that the stitches in his work refer to the stitching of wounds. I immediately thought of inner wounds, which I think we all carry within us. My works often refer to Roman mosaics, and masks also belong there. But my mask has different layers, because don’t we all wear a bit of a mask, do we really know who we are? Or is our own face also a kind of mask? For me, the burlap of the mask also refers to burn victim masks, which in turn refers to Burri’s work where he treats the surfaces with fire.
