When I first started learning how to make mosaics, we went on a group trip to Aquileia (Italy). There I fell in love with how the Romans could make birds, with a limited number of colours and yet you could see what kind of bird it was. A while ago the tendon in my right shoulder tore (the arm I use to make mosaic)… I had already planned a workshop with 3 people that could fortunately continue. And then I made a robin. After my difficult and very slow recovery after the operation, I decided to ‘get back into it’ with some smaller works. Hence the idea to make a series of birds. Because I could not stretch my arm far enough, among other things, but also because an exhibition was planned where I wanted to present some smaller works. In the meantime I have made 6 of them and 2 have been sold in Wippelgem (the sparrow and the woodpecker).
