Hi Eric! The answer to your well stated question regarding the inherent fallibility of modern societies is the hierarchic nature of humans and the environmental consequences of artificial resource surpluses. Hunter-gatherer societies are two-dimensional by necessity and cannot develop significant resource surpluses due to the constant need to migrate to greener pastures where game and foliage may be foraged. Prehistorically, we are descended from hunter-gatherer clan groups, who maintained a constant population of less than 10 million world-wide for over 60kyBP. Sedentary, post-agricultural revolution urban profoundly hierarchical civilizations living in huge urban groups are, of necessity, unsustainable–our resource extraction levels cannot be maintained. Evolution has allowed for the development of regulatory mechanisms, necessary to prevent resource “over-shoot”. My book “STRESS R US” (available on this site in the MAHB Library) details these mechanisms and proposes that untreated medical illnesses would have corrected the problem before now, if allowed to take their “natural” courses. However, we are extremely altruistic, as we are 99.9% genetically identical, and care for one another as no other species has ever done before. However, many animal models of over-population and its consequent population density stress result in catastrophic population collapses, due primarily to over-activation of the stress response, which drives their adrenal glands to ultimate failure and the animal’s death by shock. I saw this happening in clinical medical practice among my patients but intervened and helped them find less stressful life-styles and rebuild their damaged adrenal glands. This condition was named “Adrenal Fatigue” by clinical physician and nutritionist James Wilson. His little book describing the methodology to rebuild human adrenal glands has sold over 400,000 copies. We must reduce our population numbers and return to a sustainable lifeway by conscious, rational choices, or mother nature will do it for us-bugs will evolve that we cannot defeat, we’ll starve, we’ll run out of resources, we’ll cease reproduction involuntarily and our adrenal glands will fail. It’s not just climate change that’s at the tipping point, although we are obviously the cause of that on-coming train wreck as well. Read my book and limit our reproduction to single child families or perish as a species. This is our only choice left.

This is a critically important discussion for the survival of humanity and the biosphere. We have long ago surpassed the Earth’s sustainable carrying capacity for our numbers and I suggest that the increasing world-wide disease load being bravely countered by our dedicated medical professionals, with ever more heroic and expensive techniques, is the clear indicator of our population overshoot. My researches have uncovered an over-active stress response in the vast majority of modern humans, which underlies virtually all disease, and controls populations of all other mammalian species, except those we artificially support with many of the same techniques that are increasingly necessary to keep us alive. Only by continuation of Earth resource exhausting techniques will we continue to abate the inevitable coming human population collapse, unless we quickly move to one-child families world-wide and begin voluntary human population reduction. For anyone interested, exhaustive documentation may be found in my MAHB Library contribution, “STRESS R US”.

Earon makes an excellent point, which is covered in some detail in the 212pg. earlier version of this work. My homosexual patients were generally more comfortable with the population density stress model I’ve proposed than any other to explain to themselves their sexual orientation. The central theme of my monograph is that we have evolved a population reduction mechanism, based in the endocrine system, which is activated by high population densities. Infertility is its primary effect on reproduction, apparently by Cortisol inhibiting GNRH production, and, thus, the huge upswing in infertility and its treatment. Homosexuality might well serve a similar biological function, and this model is less moralistic than any other I know. In fact, we might wish to consider rewarding all couples for limiting their reproduction. I have come to view nearly all medical illness as the result of the same effect, and our death rates would be huge were it not for multiple heroic medical and public health interventions.

In my MAHB Library contribution to this globally important discussion, “Stress R Us”, I elaborated my belief that virtually all human disease is caused by our over-active Stress Response and that the medical professions, and I am a retired physician, are responsible for counter-acting these stress induced population regulation mechanisms, but only at ever greater expense. Humans have been successful in undoing nearly all of Nature’s efforts to halt and reduce our exploding numbers. However, even our brilliant efforts will soon be inadequate to prevent an increasing stress induced die-off and epidemic of stress hormone induced infertility, resulting in an involuntary and dramatic reduction of our numbers. Only single child families will allow future generations to pull back from the otherwise inevitable population collapse.
