An old form of transport is new again thanks to pressure to decarbonize.
LISBON — Yellow eléctricos, or trams, aren’t just iconic symbols of the Portuguese capital.
They’re also elements of early 20th-century transit that are gaining new relevance as the European Union boosts electric mobility in an effort to reach its 2050 climate-neutrality target — which means emissions from transport will have to fall by about 90 percent.
Many EU countries — including Portugal — are making decarbonized urban transport a central pillar of their pandemic recovery fund spending plans, now being sent for approval to the European Commission.
