I would like this node to focus on the question of, “what makes human cultures undergo rapid transformative change?” I am a political scientist by training, but I have some background education in sociology, anthropology, evolutionary psychology and cognitive psychology. I am particularly interested in looking at the limits of human rationality and the human propensity towards aggression and resource overexploitation, at least to the degree to which the world’s current dominant culture encourages those behaviours. The works of Peggy Reeve Sanday, Tom Hemenway, Ann Druyan and Ronald Wright intrigue me especially. We are currently facing the most catastrophic threat since our species’ birth, and at this point, a radical transformation in humanity’s dominant cultural narrative is a non-negotiable if civilisation is going to remain intact.
